Detroit Auto Show Trades Winter for Summer

http://cars.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b3c669e2022ad35dd088200c-pi

The North American International Auto Show is moving, although not from its physical location in downtown Detroit. Rather, it's moving down the calendar by five months.

While the 2019 NAIAS — also known as the Detroit auto show — will happen in January, the 2020 show will forgo winter and set up shop in and around the Cobo Center in June.

The move will allow one of the country's premiere auto shows to highlight Detroit's downtown assets and present an auto show that resembles an indoor/outdoor festival and dream car cruise. The Detroit Auto Dealers Association, the show organizer, said opportunities for consumer engagement will be endless. Exhibitors will be able to give media members and showgoers the opportunity to actually drive new cars, trucks, SUVs and crossovers in newly designed interactive vehicle displays. Ride and drives, autonomous/automated driving, off-road challenges and more are all on the table.

The 2019 show and schedule will be similar to years past, with Jan. 14-15 being press preview days and the public show running Jan 19-27. The show will then take 17 months off to prepare for the all-new 2020 show. The Detroit auto show has seen a declining number of automakers participating due to timing, cost and audience turnout. Time will tell whether this reinvention will attract the big auto debuts that once were a hallmark of the show before it had to compete with the November Los Angeles Auto Show and the January Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Masterack’s new rear-seat packages recently designed for the Nissan Titan King Cab with rear-seat delete allow convenient storage inside the truck cab. The packages add more organization and ease of access to tools and equipment.

Nissan has rounded out its pickup lineup with the introduction of a King Cab for its Titan and Titan XD—a configuration that features a commercial application friendly rear seat delete option.
The rear seat delete—a first for its segment—removes the rear seat, rear heater duct and rear roof-mounted assist grips and adds a flat rear load floor and rear wall finisher with tie-down hooks for secure in-cab storage space.

“This feature is going to be extremely well received by commercial truck buyers for its extra utility and secure, climate-safe storage space inside the cab. It’s a real workhorse like the new Single Cab, but with more flexibility to stow equipment and other valuables,” says Fred Diaz, Nissan division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles.

2018 Nissan TITAN XD

2018 Nissan TITAN XD offers heavy-duty attitude with choice of Crew Cab, King Cab or Single Cab body configurations, two powerful engines

Now in its third year, the 2018 TITAN XD continues to stake out unique territory with a lineup that includes Crew Cab, King Cab and Single Cab body styles, two bed lengths, choice of a powerful Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel or Nissan 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 engines, 4x4 or 4x2 drivelines and up to five well-equipped grade levels

  •     Nissan's flagship TITAN XD full-size pickup features range of models built with commercial strength components
  •     Combines many capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup
  •     TITAN's legendary innovation leadership includes cutting-edge towing, utility and driving aids
  •     New Midnight Edition Package available with TITAN XD Crew Cab Diesel SV and SL 4x4 for 2018

When it was first introduced in 2016, the Nissan TITAN XD shook up the highly competitive full-size pickup segment in the United States and Canada with a bold design and capabilities that staked out a unique position in the segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. TITAN XD offers some of the effortless towing and hauling of the larger, more expensive heavy-duty trucks – including an available maximum towing capacity of 12,310 pounds and maximum payload capacity of 2,080 pounds (when properly equipped) – yet with fuel-efficiency and affordability closer to a half-ton pickup.

Now in its third year, the 2018 TITAN XD continues to stake out unique territory with a lineup that includes Crew Cab, King Cab and Single Cab body styles, two bed lengths, choice of a powerful Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel or Nissan 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 engines, 4x4 or 4x2 drivelines and up to five well-equipped grade levels.

For 2018, TITAN XD adds a new Midnight Edition Package available on Diesel Crew Cab SV and SL grade 4x4 models, providing a custom look straight from the factory. The TITAN Midnight Edition Package includes body color front grille with dark insert, dark headlamps, black fog lamp finisher, black exterior badging, black mirrors, black door handles, 20-inch black wheels, body color front and rear bumpers, black step rains, black interior trim and "Midnight Edition" exterior badge.

Every 2018 TITAN XD is covered by America's Best Truck Warranty1, featuring bumper-to-bumper coverage of 5-years/100,000-miles, whichever comes first.

Built from the Work Job Up with Commercial Strength
Nissan TITAN XD starts with a focus on commercial strength components – from the radiator to the rear axle and everything in between. Every TITAN XD model is built on a unique frame and chassis (compared to the TITAN half-ton) to handle the Cummins diesel and Endurance® V8 gas engines, as well as the truck's expanded towing and payload potential.

Utilizing a durable, proven chassis design from Nissan Commercial Vehicles, the fully boxed, full-length ladder frame is extensively reinforced and strengthened for use with the TITAN XD with added stiffness, vertical and lateral bending, and torsional rigidity. It also features an extended 151.6-inch wheelbase – about 20 inches longer than TITAN half-ton models.

To maximize stability, handling and ride comfort, TITAN XD uses a heavy-duty, highly stable suspension design. The double-wishbone with stabilizer bar front suspension is reinforced and tuned for hard use, and the rigid rear axle suspension utilizes hefty leaf springs and leaf bushings, along with twin-tube shock absorbers. The axle is a large purpose-built American Axle Manufacturing design. The rear differential measures 9.84 inches with 3.5-inch axle tubes, while the front differential (4x4 models) measures 9.25 inches. Both are manufactured by American Axle. Also available is an Electronic Locking Rear Differential.

Hydraulic cab-mounts help isolate occupants from the advanced TITAN XD chassis. The TITAN XD rides on 17-inch, 18-inch or 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with LT245/75R17, LT275/65R18 or LT265/60R20 tires for strong all-weather/all surface traction.

Braking is provided by a 4-wheel disc system with 14.2 x 1.5-inch front/14.4 x 1.2-inch rear ventilated discs front and rear with hydraulic power assist. The high brake fluid pressure generated by an electric pump assists brake pedal force for a confident feel.

Responsive steering is provided by a recirculating ball-type high-capacity steering system with parallel rod steering linkage to optimize steering effort characteristics, even under heavy axle weight and towing conditions.

Even the radiator's heat radiation cooling capacity is engineered to help enhance performance and meet SAE J2807 compliance. TITAN XD engine capacity meets 12,000-plus pound tow requirements through use of the large radiator, air transmission cooler and large 23.6-inch engine cooling fan diameter.

Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel – Power, Durability and MPG
Creating a new class of truck also meant developing a new class of engine. Like the TITAN XD itself, the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel fills the space between more expensive big bore diesels and less capable smaller displacement diesels. And more than just power and torque, the engine is refined, starts fast and is responsive and quiet. It is also lightweight and offers clean emissions.

The TITAN XD's Cummins diesel features the Cummins M2 two-stage turbo system, which helps reduce traditional turbo-lag through precision balancing between high-pressure and low-pressure turbos. The patented Rotary Turbine Control provides solid performance across the powerband and manages exhaust gas temperatures.

The engine also includes a Bosch® HPCR fuel system to deliver precise fuel control and multiple injections per combustion stroke, which helps increase efficiency and reduce traditional "diesel clatter." And, the advanced, maintenance-free Bosch® ceramic glow plugs provide quick engine starts, even in extreme low temperatures.

Another key advantage of the Cummins diesel design is that it provides maximum durability and power in a lightweight package. Weight was reduced by building the cylinder block out of compacted graphite iron (CGI), which is stronger and lighter than traditional iron. Other lightweight engine components were added, including high-strength aluminum-alloy heads and composite valve covers. The CGI block, along with the dual overhead camshafts, also contributes to the engine's excellent noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics.

The Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel exhaust system has a particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction that enable the engine to run cleaner. That technology also serves a second purpose – reducing typical diesel noise. As a result of all these advanced systems, the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel is more capable than small displacement diesel engine offerings and less expensive than big bore heavy-duty diesels.

It is also designed to be fun to drive, with about 45 percent more torque at cruising speed than similar-sized gasoline V8 engines. And, its low revving powerband requires less downshifting and provides more confidence while towing, as well as saving fuel whether towing or carrying heavy loads.

Helping handle the power and torque of the engine is a heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin A466ND automatic transmission developed and tuned exclusively for the TITAN XD.

Nissan 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 – 390 HP, DIGTM Technology
Nissan's advanced 5.6-liter Endurance V8 engine, which is also available on the TITAN half-ton, is cast, forged and assembled at Nissan's Powertrain Assembly Plant in Decherd, Tennessee. The engine features four-valves per cylinder, Variable Valve Event & Lift and Direct Injection, and is rated at 390 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm and 394 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The 5.6-liter Endurance V8 is backed by a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The engine includes Nissan's advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology, which combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response. The engine also features Direct Injection Gas (DIG™) technology, which provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non-direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. An 11.2:1 compression ratio is provided by a new piston design, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance (previous Titan: 9.8:1) and a Multi Control Valve (MCV) assists in managing the engine's thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.

In addition, Nissan TITAN XD 4x4 models feature a new transfer case designed to ensure maximum power distribution in every gear. It distributes torque to both ends and provides four-wheel drive when added traction is needed on snow, ice, sand, mud, muck, dirt, water, gravel – whatever the job site presents.

Durable off-road performance has also been emphasized, with features such as Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Brake Limited-Slip Differential (BLSD). An off-road gauge uses accelerometer data to calculate the vehicle's pitch and roll angles.

Towing and Hauling – Informed and In Control
TITAN XD models equipped with the 5.0L Cummins diesel have a maximum payload of 2,420 pounds (when properly equipped) and a maximum towing rating of 12,640 pounds (when properly equipped).

Equipped with the 5.6L Endurance gasoline V8, maximum payload is rated at 2,910 pounds (when properly equipped) and a maximum towing rating of 11,590 pounds (when properly equipped).

Among the list of TITAN XD's available towing aids are an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights from inside the TITAN cab or with the key fob.

Also assisting trailer hook-ups is the TITAN XD's available RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides, while the available Intelligent Around View® Monitor (I-AVM)2 provides a composite "bird's eye" view of the surrounding area from front, rear and side cameras to help with parking and pulling in and out of tight spaces. The system also includes Moving Object Detection (MOD), which helps alert the driver to detected moving objects around the vehicle via an on-screen notification and warning chime.

Helping TITAN XD owners take advantage of its ample towing power are a range of available hitches – including an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame and easily accessible in the bed. Gooseneck hitches put the load in front of the rear axle, enhancing the ability to control the vehicle. The 2018 Nissan TITAN XD meets the J2807 certification's standards.

TITAN XD also includes a range of available advanced driving aids, including Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Front and Rear Sonar System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Smart Design, Smart Utility
The 2018 Nissan TITAN XD is offered in three body configurations. TITAN XD Crew Cab features four wide-opening doors and a 6.5-foot bed. TITAN XD King Cab includes with 172-degree wide-opening rear doors for easy access to the rear seat, while the TITAN XD Single Cab offers two doors and an 8.0-foot bed.

Inspired by a theme of "powerful precision tool," the TITAN XD exterior provides a bold, commanding presence with a fresh, modern technical feel. The designers sought to give TITAN a feeling of athletic strength – a look that honors the power of the Cummins diesel and Endurance V8 engines.

The profile of the TITAN XD, with its extended front overhang, was actually influenced by the engine, to incorporate the high performance grille, charged air cooler and two-battery installation. Aerodynamics also played a role in the exterior design, which is improved from the previous Titan and incorporates a front spoiler, roof and tailgate spoilers, front tow hook hole cover, underbody covers, rear tire wind deflectors and a seal between the cab and bed. Available exterior features include LED headlights and taillights, signature Daytime Running Lights, puddle lamps, and step rails for cabin and bed entry/exit.

TITAN's industry-first Utili-track® Bed Channel System features four heavy-duty aluminum alloy cleats that move and lock anywhere along the walls, bed floor and header tracks that give the user endless tie-down possibilities.

TITAN XD also features available dual lockable in-bed "TITAN Box" storage boxes that sit sight-unseen at street level and can hold a wide range of essential work and recreational equipment. Unlike other pickup bed storage boxes, the TITAN XD units are accessible from inside the bed without having to remove a camper top or tonneau cover. The boxes are watertight (and drainable) and can be used as a cooler for picnics or tailgating. They are also easily removable for times when extra bed capacity is required.

Other TITAN XD bed features include the popular spray-on bedliner, flush-mounted LED bedrail lighting, cargo and tailgate lamps, 110-volt in-bed access and a damped tailgate that is light to lift and smoothly damped when lowering.

A Big Cabin with a Bold and Commanding Presence
Trucks today are multi-functional, used as work and everyday vehicles – so the interior has to be multi-functional as well. The designers focused on enhanced utility and on making the interior easy to use through an improved layout of switches, driver controls and storage spaces. The 2nd row underseat storage, for example, includes a locking lid for added security and the integrated foldout flat floor. The center console can hold a computer tablet with case or a 15-inch laptop.

All switches are grouped by function type and location is based on frequency of use. Other convenient interior design features include seven assist grips, console-side map pockets, 12-volt and 110-volt power outlets (in addition to the bed), Remote Engine Start3 with climate control function, and Rockford Fosgate premium 12-speaker audio system. The special attention to detail even includes moving the glove compartment handle to the left hand side for easier access by the driver.

The TITAN XD also features a tilt and telescoping steering column with a standard column-mounted transmission shifter lever – a move that helps increase the visibility and usability of the center stack area. This also opened up the center console for additional storage, allowing riders to fit a laptop in the center console without giving up rear cupholders and 2nd row climate control vents.

The premium grade instrument panel includes a combination of analog and digital gauges, along with a 5.0-inch color display, unique diesel monitoring and maintenance displays, and available NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps and NissanConnect Services with 7.0-inch color monitor (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately).

As in other Nissan vehicles, TITAN XD offers seating inspired by NASA. The standard front and rear Zero Gravity seats help maximize posture positioning for enhanced comfort during long distance driving. Heating and cooling front sears are also available, along with a choice of water-repellant fabric or durable leather-appointments. Heated front and rear seats are available in both cloth and leather trim levels.

Special attention was also paid to reducing the intrusion of noise and vibration into the cabin. TITAN XD utilizes laminated front and rear (Crew Cab) side glass, the first full-size pickup to do so. Engine noise isolation and body sealing was also improved versus the previous generation TITAN design.

Nissan Foundation awards $730,000 in grants to 29 organizations promoting the value of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity

Nissan Foundation promotes cultural diversity in America
  • In 26th year, Nissan Foundation maintains its singular focus on recognizing nonprofits promoting respect among racial and cultural groups
  • The Nissan Foundation annually awards grants to nonprofits in California, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Tennessee and Texas
  • Nissan will accept Letters of Intent for 2019 grant cycle beginning in October
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Nissan Foundation is awarding $730,000 in grants to 29 nonprofit organizations for its 2018 grant cycle. The nonprofit recipients are located in Southern California, North Central Texas, Middle Tennessee, Central Mississippi, Eastern Michigan and the New York and Atlanta metro areas.

Over its 26-year history, the Nissan Foundation has awarded more than $10 million to approximately 120 organizations promoting respect and understanding among cultural and ethnic groups.

"The Nissan Foundation has a proud history of recognizing and supporting organizations working to promote the value of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity," said Nissan Foundation President Scott Becker, who is also senior vice president, Administration, Nissan North America, Inc. "We're thrilled to once again honor organizations making a real impact in this regard."

In 1992, Nissan North America formed the Nissan Foundation in response to the civil unrest that occurred near Nissan's then U.S. headquarters in Southern California following the Rodney King trial verdict. Every year since, the Nissan Foundation has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations that offer educational programs that inform, inspire and celebrate diversity among the various cultural and ethnic groups that make up society.

"These organizations do extremely important work in our communities," said Vicki Smith, executive director, Nissan Foundation. "Many grantee organizations are bringing cultural diversity to life in compelling ways, while others focus on the challenges of eliminating prejudice and discrimination. Each organization is making a valuable contribution to building respect and greater understanding among people – not just in their communities, but often on a national level."

Among the organizations receiving a 2018 Nissan Foundation grant is the Nashville Public Library Foundation, which is receiving its third grant from the Nissan Foundation this year. The Nashville Public Library was named the 2017 Library of the Year by Library Journal Magazine, recognizing its profound service to the community, creativity, leadership and innovation in developing community programs. The library started the "Civil Rights and a Civil Society" program as a training experience for law enforcement officials, a platform for discussing complex community dynamics through a historical framework. Over the past year the program has expanded to include community organizations, schools, corporate groups and delegations from other cities. The Nashville Public Library will use its 2018 Nissan Foundation grant to support continued expansion of the program.
Another Nissan Foundation 2018 grantee is the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, a secular, nonprofit that promotes mutual respect with practical programs that bridge religious difference and combat prejudice in schools, workplaces, health care settings and combat zones.

Through a public education program called "Combating Extremism," Tanenbaum disseminates education materials that address fear, misinformation and prejudice. The resources include fact sheets on current issues such as white supremacy and the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. Materials include targeted questions for use by teachers, religious leaders, community organizers and parents.

Tanenbaum will use its 2018 Nissan Foundation grant to further its outreach efforts, including the creation of six new resources.

The Nissan Foundation initially reviewed 101 letters of intent and 39 proposals from nonprofits in seven U.S. states where Nissan operates before awarding grants for 2018.

2018 Nissan Frontier Surprises Full-Size Truck Owner

 http://cars.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b3c669e2022ad3534747200c-pi

A Pickup Enthusiast's Takeaway by Mark Williams

Though I try to stay objective when reviewing vehicles, I've owned six full-size pickup trucks and never considered anything smaller. The Frontier S proved it is a completely viable ground support vehicle for my vintage motoring hobby, plus it can be employed in countless other uses. The only thing it couldn't do for me was trailer one of my vintage cars. Now that I think about it, I don't trailer my cars anyway. The money saved here would certainly offset having to make occasional arrangements for a project or parts car hauL.

Nissan brand ties for most awards in J.D. Power 2018 Initial Quality Study (IQS)

The 2018 Nissan Frontier was the top-rated midsize pickup for the third consecutive year in the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan topped three vehicle segments and finished in the top three in two others in the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS). J.D. Power IQS is the industry benchmark for new vehicle quality. This year, the Nissan brand improved by eight problems per hundred vehicles (PP100) to an overall average of just 85 PP100, which was best performance of all non-luxury Japanese brands.

The 2018 Nissan Frontier was the top-rated Midsize Pickup for the third consecutive year, while Maxima won Large Car honors with 57 PP100, the second highest score of any vehicle in the study. The popular Nissan Altima took top honors in the competitive Midsize Car segment with a 65 PP100 score, good for sixth among all vehicles in the survey and an 18-point improvement from the 2017 study.

The all-new 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF was another bright spot among many for the brand, with a 17-point improvement in initial vehicle quality over the car's previous generation surveyed in 2017.

“Nissan's J.D. Power IQS results for 2018 are encouraging because they reflect customer satisfaction directly from the people who buy and lease our vehicles,” said Mark Swenson, vice president, Total Customer Satisfaction, Nissan North America. “Positive IQS performance is a tribute to the ongoing efforts of Nissan Engineering, R&D, Quality and Manufacturing teams around the world, as well as our many global supplier partners. It is rewarding for us to see positive movement in J.D. Power IQS for three years running.”

Nissan's nine PP100 improvement marks the brand's third year of significant improvement in the IQS report. Almost 76,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2018 model-year vehicles were surveyed for 233 potential problems among 33 brands and 240 models from February through May 2018 for this year's J.D. Power IQS report.

Nissan's good news went beyond vehicle nameplates. Its massive Smyrna manufacturing plant, the largest production volume assembly plant in North America, was awarded Bronze designation for its System Two (car line) tying for third best in quality performance among North American Manufacturing facilities. System Two assembles the Altima, Maxima and LEAF EV. Adding to the positive manufacturing news; Smyrna System One (SUV line), Canton 2, MS, and Aguascalientes 1, Mexico also scored above the industry average.

Nissan Hits Overland Expo West With Armada Mountain Patrol Concept

.
 DSC_4294_preview II

The Overland Expo West is the place you want to be if your truck sees more dirt than asphalt in its overall use. The event is an ever-expanding conference of all things camping and "overlanding," the practice of driving cross-country with as little use of paved paths as possible. The overlanding community is a big one, with some serious money being thrown around to create self-sufficient, go-anywhere, live-off-the-grid machines.

So, it makes sense that Nissan would debut its latest crowd-sourced concept truck, the Armada Mountain Patrol. Nissan had great publicity success with last year's Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp pickup truck and figured it would try again this year with the Armada full-size SUV. Nissan let the public vote on the features and parts it wanted to see on the Mountain Patrol using its social media outlets, with the finished product on display at the recent expo.

The concept started as a new all-wheel-drive 2018 Armada equipped with a 5.6-liter V-8 engine making 390 horsepower. From there, the public voted on what parts they wanted to see on the Mountain Patrol, and it ended up with a laundry list of fun parts. A four-person Cascadia Vehicle Tents rooftop-mounted pop-up Mt. Shasta tent was fitted to the top of the tent along with a Rhino-Rack awning. An additional Alps Mountaineering pop-up tent, sleeping bag and chairs is included in case four berths isn't enough. Polishing off the roof is a Baja Designs LED light bar, matching the lights mounted in the bumper and wheel wells.

Team PUTC Smokes Team Nissan in Tennessee Cook-Off

Nissan BBQ Titan Meatup

The Great Titan Meat Up was a two-part event set against the lovely hills in and around Pigeon Forge, Tenn. It was designed to showcase the off-road prowess of Nissan's Titan half-ton and Titan XD pickup trucks as well as put Nissan's Smokin' Titan concept to the ultimate test: a BBQ cook-off.
The Smokin' Titan is the brainchild of Billy Hayes, Nissan's vice president of regional operations for North America, who is a huge smoked meat pit boss. The truck came about after Hayes asked in a meeting, "What if we built a smoker into a Titan pickup?" One thing led to another and a truck was born. You can read all about the Smokin' Titan here, introduced earlier this year at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. Since then it's traversed the country from Idaho to Tennessee to the Meat Up, hitting four barbecue hot spots along the way. It will be making appearances all summer at various festivals and cook-offs across the country.

Dark horse: Nissan's 'Midnight' Frontier punches above its weight

 2018 Nissan Frontier Midnight Edition

Look around: just about all of the latest full-size pickups proliferating on America's roads have descriptions like "larger in every dimension." They're boasting they can do more, but they're also taller to see over and harder to maneuver in the country's many saturated, dense driving environments. What happened to the smaller but often surprisingly useful trucks that could thread the needle just as well in urban concrete as off the pavement?

That's a question that particularly applies for tradesmen and fleets in cities and surrounding metro regions relying on the do-all pickup truck. It's one the Japanese automakers have long been good at answering, with offerings like Toyota's Tacoma logging more than 20 years of sales in the United States. General Motors has its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, and Ford is about to leap back into the class with its reincarnated Ranger.

But the smaller, more compact pickup has perhaps had its most consistent place over the years at Nissan, which began rolling them off assembly lines in the early 1930s under its former name Datsun. And Nissan's current midsize Frontier, which also has been sold on these shores for more than two decades, offers some very full-size-like prowess and utility — particularly in the last dozen years or so, courtesy of its available (and large for the segment) 24-valve 4.0L V6.

Electric Powertrains Are the Future. Will Fleets Be Ready?

Many automakers are making a switch to producing battery-electric and hybrid electric vehicles across all vehicle classes. Image:Josh Bauer/NREL

Most readers of Government Fleet are seasoned professionals pursuing careers either in public fleet management or in corporate roles in support of public sector fleets. For a moment, however, put aside your current career history and aspirations and try to remember when you were a younger person, weighing career options and considering just what path to take.

The public fleet industry is on the threshold of a truly cosmic shift, and it’s quite possible that young people today are looking at our industry and questioning those options. We should, as those young people may be doing, consider what this shift will mean when it occurs.

The shift will be toward a predominance of electromotive powertrain technology and away from the internal combustion engine (ICE). Is it true that the demise of the ICE is greatly overstated, or, should we, like those young people still contemplating their career paths, be reading the tea leaves and presume they portend a very different future for us?

Truckin' Tennessee Trails in a Nissan Titan XD

30-nissan-titan-2018-angle--blue--dynamic--exterior--front--off-road II

Nissan's Titan pickup truck is the new kid at school — picked on, not given any respect, overlooked when it comes time to choose teams for sports. But that's OK; Nissan seems to relish being the underdog of the pickup class as it gives the automaker freedom to do things a little out of the box. The latest version of the Mississippi-built Titan has been out for a couple of years now, and Titans are still a rare sight in most parts of the country. But that doesn't bother the Nissan crew; they're soldiering along with a truck that they're eager to prove is as capable as domestic-brand pickups.

With that in mind, I found myself in the parking lot of the Hilton at McGhee Tyson Airport staring at a 2018 Titan half-ton and Titan XD pickups as journalists converged upon Knoxville, Tenn., for the first part of Nissan's Great Titan Meat Up. The Meat Up was the latest in a series of special events designed to showcase the Titan in the wild. Meat Up weekend kicked off with a day off-roading in the Smoky Mountains followed by a smoked meat cooking competition in Pigeon Forge.
A Mix of Off-Road Titans

The off-road event took us into the hills of Windrock Park, one of the largest off-road parks in the country encompassing more than 72,000 acres laced with more than 300 miles of off-highway trails that accommodate everything from side-by-sides to dirt bikes to full-size 4x4 trucks like the Titans. Our fleet was a mix of Titan half tons with the 390-horsepower, 5.6-liter Endurance V-8 and Titan XDs — Nissan's 'tweener pickup that's not quite a half ton, not quite a heavy duty — powered by a 310-hp, turbo-diesel 5.0-liter Cummins V-8. All trucks were the Pro-4X off-road trim, with higher ride heights, all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, an electronic locking rear differential and some additional underbody skid-plate protection that came in handy on the trails.
